This session will cover the following topics related to addiction:
- Definition of addiction, DSM-5 description
- What drugs do to the brain and body
- Signs and symptoms of drug use
- Resources for help

Presenters include: Connie Holms and Celeste Heaivilin-Penner from the Central Nebraska Council on Alcoholism and Addictions. The Central Nebraska Council on Alcoholism and Addictions, Inc. is a not-for-profit organization serving central Nebraska since 1967. CNCAA is a long-time partner agency of the Heartland United Way, serving Hall, Hamilton, Howard and Merrick Counties. Its mission is “Offering hope and changing lives by fostering healthy lifestyles. Preventing Addiction. Sharing Resources. Supporting Recovery.”
Connie Holmes has spent the last thirty-six years employed with the Central Nebraska Council on Alcoholism and Addictions in Grand Island serving in all capacities throughout those years, and as the Director since September 2006. Her passion is prevention (focusing on youth) and helping individuals and families whose lives are affected by addiction.
Celeste Heaivilin-Penner, MSED, LMHP, is a Christian-based counselor in Grand Island, Hastings, and the surrounding areas. She can do both in the office or home visits depending on each individual situation. For the Council Celeste works as a Coordinator for three area substance use prevention coalitions and serves as lead for CNCAA’s Intervention Program, assisting families with education about addiction and assisting with interventions. She has worked with the Council for the past twelve years.
